Caldicott Guardian

As part of our work to continually assure those we work with of our commitment to the highest levels of information governance, Humana Europe has appointed a Caldicott Guardian. Caldicott Guardians were instituted in healthcare organisations in England following publication by the Department of Health in March 1996of ‘Protection and Use of Patient Information’. The Caldicott Guardian’s role is strategic, advisory and facilitative. The role is to ensure that the organisation and individual employees will comply with high practical standards for handling patient information. As part of this commitment Humana Europe has in place processes overseen by our Caldicott Guardian to create year on year improvements in our information governance. We have instituted policies and procedures in line with ISO27001 and have a thorough programme to continually review and develop the company’s information governance.

At a practical level, Caldicott Guardians are responsible for agreeing and reviewing internal protocols governing the protection and use of patient-identifiable information by the staff of their organisation, ensuring that these protocols satisfy national guidance, policy and law. In addition, Guardians are responsible for agreeing and reviewing protocols governing the disclosure of patient information across organisational boundaries.
